Fishing the Clyde
A Diverse and Inclusive Fishing Adventure on the River Clyde
The UCAPA controlled water of the River Clyde, uniquely divided by the magnificent Falls of Clyde, invites anglers of all skill levels to a multifaceted fishing experience. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, the varied landscapes and green pastures of the Clyde offer a rich and welcoming environment for both migratory and freshwater fishing. Historically, the River Clyde was renowned and still is, for some of the finest wild brown trout and grayling fishing in Scotland and now, with the welcome return of Atlantic salmon and sea trout, it has also become a migratory river of considerable note.
Varied Fishing Opportunities
The UCAPA controlled water offers some 130 bank miles of fishing, from brisk, fast-moving streams to serene glides filled with expectation, allowing a wide array of fishing techniques. For those seeking the thrill of migratory fishing, the chase for salmon and sea trout can be both challenging and exhilarating. In contrast, yearlong freshwater fishing for large red spotted hard fighting wild brown trout in spring and summer followed by the lady grayling in the frosty winter months, appeals to anglers who appreciate the subtle art of angling. This is particularly so in the pastoral waters of the upper reaches of the river from which a fine specimen fish maybe gained. Especially when fly fishing using the hallowed and nationally renowned Clyde style flies.
Community and Conservation
Beyond the pursuit of different fish species, fishing on the UCAPA water of the River Clyde is about being part of a community. UCAPA fosters a sense of camaraderie among anglers, united by a shared passion for fishing and a commitment to conservation. This collective effort not only enriches the angling experience but also contributes to the preservation and appreciation of one of Scotland’s most ionic and storied rivers- angling is really one of the “Songs of the Clyde.”
Fishing Seasons and Species
- Salmon: The UCAPA Salmon fishing season begins on February 11th and runs until October 31st, with the peak season typically in September and October.
- Brown Trout: Renowned as some of the best in Scotland, the wild Brown Trout fishing season starts on March 15th and concludes on October 6th.
- Grayling: The winter season for Grayling starts on October 7th and extends until March 14th.
Fishing Regulations
Anglers must carefully read and adhere to all the permit regulations and be in possession of the appropriate permit before fishing. This is an important requirement as the regulations form an intrinsic part of UCAPA’s conservation policy.
Conservation and Management Efforts
UCAPA has more than 130 years of history of river and fisheries management, with a focus on maintaining and developing angling facilities for various fish species, including Salmon, Sea Trout, Brown Trout and Grayling. These efforts ensure that the River Clyde remains a sustainable and rewarding fishing destination.
